Freestyle Flying FanaticI'm a freestyle kite flying fanatic. I've been flying kites "seriously" for over a decade now and have seen the sport and technology of kite flying grow in many interesting ways, some of which I have helped to push along. This section looks at various aspects of kite flying, design, and other kite-related matters that I've dabbled in. This section contains the 2004 Stoke Park series of kite movies that I flew, filmed and edited over the year. There's one for each month, mostly featuring the Gemini, but also including the Airbow and a prototype Benson kite known then as the "C-Class" which eventually became the Deep Space. This page traces some of the history of sport kite design and my involvement since 1995. It covers the evolution of trick and freestyle kites leading up to the Gemini, Airbow, and Deep Space that I designed with Tim Benson of Benson Kites. This section covers various aspects related to the design and construction of bridles for sport kites. It contains details of the various different bridle designs that I've used, adapted, designed and developed for kites, including dynamic bridles, the Active Bridle, Dihedral, Trihedral and Cross-Active Bridles. It also includes information on the various knots used and provides other useful design, tuning and construction advice. The real magic of kite flying for me is what is known as "Freestyle Flying". Freestyle is about Freedom and Style. It's not just all-out technical tricks, but also incorporates more stylish, structured elements of flying. This section describes two competition formats that I devised to promote freestyle-oriented kite flying. This is my personal archive of posts from the rec.kites USENET newsgroup. rec.kites was where we used to hang out online and talk about kites in the days before we all drifted off onto various different bulletin boards on the World Wide Wasteland. This section contains reports and pictures from various kiting events that I've attended, starting with the Kite Party 2004. |
